Mountaineer ASHRAE is considering becoming WV ASHRAE Chapter

In the last year, it became apparent that local ASHRAE support to north and northeast WV has been very limited. The state is split up with 4 different ASHRAE chapters - all of them out of state. . Mountaineer ASHRAE section covers only 60% of the state. It appears ASHRAE members outside the Mountaineer Section area are left out of much of what is happening in locally WV.

In the last year, a lot is happening. The Mountaineer ASHRAE Section has really got their act together.
  • We have a full slate of Officers and Committee Chairs..
  • We had four lunch meetings, two of which were webcast to Morgantown engineers. Speakers came from WV, Ky, Penn and Wis.
  • Conducted 3 afternoon seminars, one by an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer.
  • Membership grew by 10%.
  • The State of WV is adopting ASHRAE 90.1-2007 for ALL Commercial Buildings effective Sept 1, 2013. To help designers, contractors and manufacturers understand this new code, Mountaineer ASHRAE members and WVU, supported by the WV Energy Department, conducted seminars at the March WV EXPO, in Morgantown on May 1 and in Martinsburg on May 3. Attending firms got free copies of the 2009 IECC (Residential) and ASHRAE 90.1-2007 (Commercial) energy codes. (A $133 value).
In order to provide better local support for all WV ASHRAE members, the Mountaineer Board of Governors and Officers are recommending the section becoming the WV ASHRAE Chapter and it includes all counties the state. For this to happen, we need the approval of 40 WV ASHRAE members.

Creating a WV ASHRAE Chapter would:
  • Provide local support to all ASHRAE members in WV.
  • Aline WV ASHRAE with the many other organizations that are state based.  (e.g. WV AIA, WV AEE, WVEE, etc.)
  • Enable support for ASHRAE student chapters at WVU and Marshall if the interest was there.
  • Offer state wide training on energy codes, high performance buildings, IAQ, etc. in both physical and/or emeetings though out the state.
  • Offer expanded local technical and leadership training.
  • Offer discounted ASHRAE literature supplied by the WV Energy Office.
  • Have a voice/vote in the ASHRAE Regional Events.

The petition drive is underway now. Need 40 members to vote yes. Stay tuned for the outcome.
